Or does it only work with a DC motor?
The motor is from my old electric leaf blower and it clearly says on it: 1 HP Permanent Magnet Motor. Since it plugs in to the electricity I thought it was an AC motor, but apparently the circuit board thing that it's connected to must be an AC/DC transformer.

Uh. A permanent magnet motor is a DC motor.
An AC motor has a rotor, stator and no brushes and cannot be used as a generator. The AC motor relies on there being no permanent magnetic field to operate since it's field alternates.
Any permanent magnet motor can be used as a generator of DC voltage. You can then use an inverter to convert it to AC. The voltage must be regulated as stated in the previous post and the motor should be sized according to your needs.
There are kits for this but most come complete with motor/generator attached (once used in this manner it's not called a motor but a generator).

Do a internet search and you will find many resources for this topic. If you are looking to buy a kit or a complete wind turbine, look here:

Here are a couple sites describing what you are looking for.

One other option, and much more portable would be a deep cycle battery and a solar panel for recharging. You should be able to run a couple lights for 10 -12 hours off of one battery which would recharge during the day.

How large of a building can one average sized wind turbine power? Is it closer to a small house or apartment or more like a whole school? I don’t know what all of the energy vocab means, so please tell me the answer in a simple easy to understand way. Thanks.

One turbine (1.5 Megawatt, GE turbine–the normal ones used in a wind farm) will power 400 homes, or 4 large industrial plants, or 20 schools.

I know generally turbines aren’t made from polymers but if you had to pick a polymer to make a wind turbine for alternative energy which would you suggest best fits the properties required?

Probably Kevlar bonded to Fiberglass, it offers a combination of strength and very little flexion

Homemade wind turbines - Why Should You Make Your Own wind turbines? Building your own wind turbines is a great way to protect the environment and slash your monthly electricity bill.

Contrary to common perception, making wind turbines is very easy and doesn’t require any special skills. The materials you are going to need are: metal scissors, sandpaper, an electrical stove, copper leads, copper flashing sheet, etc. You can find these materials at your local hardware store at a very low price.

The benefits of having your own residential solar power:

     1. Reduce your electricity bill by more than 80%.

     2. Create more energy than you use and get paid by your utility company.

     3. Help to fight global warming and protect the environment by reducing your carbon footprint.

     4. Stop depending on non-renewable energy resources. You can have your own power source and stop caring about power outages.

     5. You can go completely off-grid, not affected in the least by rising energy prices.

     6. Get tax credits for using green energy.

     7. You can have a lot of fun in the process!

To build this system you will need to spend $100 - $200 and you can use it to power any appliance in your home: computer, lights, washing machine, fridge. Compared to the cost of installing a pre-made wind turbine, making your own is much more affordable, considering the fact that a ready made one way cost up to $3000. It would be better to install the system on your roof so that it can absorb direct sunlight, but you can also use the backyard or the garden.

The most important step you need to take if want to generate your own electricity, is to seek out a quality and detailed manual. There are many diy guides available online that can walk you through the process of building homemade wind turbines.

These guides can provide with:

   * Tons of diagrams or even videos.

   * Easy to follow instructions.

   * Information about where to get all the needed parts.

   * Details about how to find cheap materials.

Collecting and taking advantage of the power of the sun is now easier and cheaper than ever. There plenty of people who are now installing their own solar energy system. If you want to join them… Homemade wind turbines - Why Should You Make Your Own wind turbines?
